“News reports today have confirmed Gov. Snyder’s continuing intent to go around the legislature and ignore the rights of Michigan voters by striking an unprecedented ‘deal’ with Canada and the Obama Administration to build a government bridge.”
“Governor Snyder’s actions threaten to neuter the Michigan legislature and preempt the will of the Michigan voters. As far as the cost of the Snyder bridge, add to it the price of democracy. The governor has a constitutional obligation to respect the branches of government and the voice of the people in the voting booth. His most recent actions don’t live up to this obligation.
“The Michigan legislature has repeatedly voted ‘NO’ on the government bridge after reviewing all the facts. In November the people of Michigan have an opportunity vote for themselves on this issue but Gov. Snyder intends to ignore the right of the people to vote and steamroll their elected representatives.”
“Governor Snyder has exceeded his oath of office in proceeding to negotiate behind closed doors, out of the oversight of the legislature and outside the bounds of the Constitution. Instead of partnering with the people, Gov. Snyder is conspiring with Canada who wants to use cheap steel from China. “Fortunately, citizens still have the opportunity to sign petitions and guarantee a vote before Michigan is committed to a government bridge. In spite of the Governor’s campaign to make this debate about class warfare, we feel good about our ballot initiative, which was to take the issue of whether or not Michigan needs or wants a government bridge to the voters. The Ambassador Bridge was approved in the 1920s by a public referendum similar to the one being advanced in our petition drive. We believe if the taxpayers deserved a vote then – and they surely deserve a vote today.”
